Dear friends,

If there are no activists, there is no democracy. If you don’t allow critical journalists to do their job, there is no democracy. If you as a government don’t uphold human rights in your country, there is no democracy. I am standing here, together with my colleague Judith Klokkenburg, for you as a democratically chosen member of the city council of The Hague, the city that calls itself the city of Justice and Peace. The city that hosted the first Shelter City in the world, almost 10 years ago. I am glad I have the honour of standing here with human rights activists from all over the world, in international solidarity with Roman Protasevitsj. I am also standing here as a European, who can’t believe the tactics that have been used by a European government to arrest a dissident.

We know this is not just about Roman Protasevitsj. Many brave persons around the world risk their lives to fight for human rights. Today, we rename this street where the embassy from Belarus is based, in the Roman Protasevitsj lane. And we suggest to keep this name up there, until Protasevitsj and his partner are released and allowed to leave Belarus.

Thank you.
